The device is triggered by vibration of the dog’s throat when they bark as opposed to those types that respond to sound or both. This means that sounds from another source will not trigger the device, as can happen with some other shock collars.

The PetSafe has some excellent built in features including 6 progressive correctional levels which will automatically progress upwards in strength of shock, should the dog continue to bark within a 30 second time frame.

It is claimed that the shock delivered is not too strong, even for small or timid dog and there is a safety turn off that will automatically shut off the device for a 3 minute period, if the dog barks 15 times in less than 50 seconds.

The purpose of the collar is to assist in training the dog, and it is not intended for punishing the dog. The receiver is also water resistant which makes it ok to use if there is some rain or snow about.

This dog bark collar has been given an overall rating of 3.8 stars from customer reviews.  There are a number of problems reported from some customers and perhaps the most concerning of which, is that the device can over correct, which has caused distress and pain to some animals.

Despite the claim that the shock is harmless and suitable for a small and timid dog, one customer found an immediate problem with their dog being much traumatized with just the one shock.  Even though they removed the collar immediately, the dog took a number of hours to return to her normal self.

They decided to try the shock on themselves, and found it to be very unpleasant and painful, concluding that this device is barbaric and horrible and should not be used at all.

Another customer reiterated the cruelty of the device and suggested you try it yourself before inflicting it upon your dog, and making the added recommendation of using another type of deterrent in preference to this one.

They exchanged it for the citronella type which they found to be much more humane and effective. Despite these comments, there were plenty of other reports where no ill effects were experienced.

Others complained of having to replace the battery too frequently which caused an ongoing cost in using the device.

Another customer suggested that if the strap was elastic it would be helpful and they also found the device too sensitive as it would shock their dog when the animal sneezed.

This model, while coming with the auto-adjustment does not have a manual control to be able to adjust the settings yourself, so this could be seen a disadvantage compared to others.

Depending on your dog and the problem you are trying to control, you might find this dog bark collar useful, however, it might be only worth getting if you are prepared to test it on yourself first.
