“I’ve waited a few months to write this review just to make sure the product lasted. To say that I’m happy with the outcome is grossly understated. We have a 3 yr old male maltese, who’s great with us, but an absolute PITA to neighbors and guests. All he would do is bark and growl like he wanted to kill people. Overall this product has a huge number of customer reviews and the overall rating while not as high as some others, at 3.5, is still very good. Particularly considering there are over 1,000 reviews.

There are a reasonable amount of negative reviews although not too many considering the overall amount given.

Complaints reported included things like, their dog emptied the reservoir within minutes, and that the spray only served to be a temporary distraction rather than an effective deterrent.  It was also mentioned that the product has a short shelf life.

Having a short shelf life may not be an issue if you could use it effectively to retrain your dog and eliminate their bad barking habit. The best success seems to come about when you use these devices in conjunction with other methods of training such as voice commands.

This device has also been reported to be over sensitive and it doesn’t have any option to adjust it, so that leaves a risk of your dog being traumatized by inappropriate correction.

Occasionally you can get a bad health reaction from your dog, where they have a particular sensitivity to the citronella spray causing them to cough, wheeze and even vomit.  This is a clear indication that you should not use this device with such a dog that has any allergic reaction such as these.

In the unlikely event that you should have such allergy problems with your dog, then the careful use of a shock collar might be a more suitable alternative.

Another factor to think about is that citronella is not considered safe for humans to ingest or to inhale, so this is not likely to be ok for your pet either. Obviously you don’t want to compromise the health of your animal, so using such a collar would only be advisable if it is effective with minimal use.

So clearly citronella is not going to work for every dog, however, it is worth a try especially if you use it in conjunction with other training, such as verbal commands, rewards and if necessary a shock collar for those dogs with persistent barking problems.
